Syracuse University’s University College (UC) offers academic, professional development, and enrichment programs for part-time students during the fall and spring semesters, plus a wide choice of courses for full-time, part-time, and visiting students during the summer. UC offers open enrollment in most courses so that any interested student can earn SU credits on a nonmatriculated basis if he or she meets academic requirements.
Part-time students can earn SU associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees by enrolling through UC. Part-time students have access to academic advising, financial aid, registration, and bursar services through UC.
UC is the home college for four multidisciplinary programs of study leading to the all-University bachelor of professional studies degree, as well as four undergraduate credit certificate programs described in the University College section of this catalog.
All SU associate degree programs are available solely through University College.
Year-Round Programs at uc
In collaboration with Syracuse University schools and colleges, UC offers credit and noncredit courses and degree programs at a variety of locations and in specialized time formats to meet the needs of part-time students. Courses are taught by University faculty and community experts certified for adjunct status by academic departments. Distance education degree programs, serving students worldwide, combine short residencies and online courses with self-paced study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) for first-time part-time SU students is a year-round educational and financial support program administered by UC.
The English Language Institute provides intensive English language instruction to international students and professionals year round. It collaborates with academic units on special programs.
The Center for Business Information Technologies offers applied computer training and certificate programs.
Syrtis (SU Technology-enhanced Instructional Solutions) collaborates with the School of Education’s Department of Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation to integrate instructional design and development with innovative information technologies to produce computer-based and other electronically supported learning tools for organizations.
The Leadership Institute creates programs tailored to business needs of organizations by designing, developing, and implementing training and development services to promote positive leadership and organizational performance.
The Work Keys Center offers job analysis, skill assessment, and training for Central New York employers and employees.
The Legal Studies Program prepares people for a paralegal career in part-time programs throughout the year (fall, spring, and summer) on either a credit or noncredit basis.
Humanistic Studies noncredit college-level courses are offered by UC through the College of Arts and Sciences.
Fall and Spring
During the fall and spring semesters, UC offers approximately 370 undergraduate and graduate courses, most of which meet in the evening or online. The fall semester is from late August to early December; spring is mid-January to early May. Most evening classes meet one night per week for 14 weeks. Part-time undergraduates can take both evening and daytime classes, plus courses in varied formats including short residency, online, accelerated, condensed, and weekend. SU course catalogs of part-time evening, weekend, and short-residency courses are available mid-July for the fall semester and mid-November for the spring semester.
Summer studies
During the summer, UC serves full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students including visiting students, incoming undergraduates, and high school students. See Summer College and SummerStart sections for other summer programs for high school students and incoming undergraduates.
Approximately 600 undergraduate- and graduate-level courses and workshops are offered that vary in length from two days to 14 weeks and include classroom-based and online study. Besides MAYmester (a two-week intensive session), there are three summer sessions: two six-week sessions (I: mid-May to late June and II: early July to mid-August) and one 7- to 12-week session (mid-May to mid-August). The summer course schedule is available at the beginning of March.
Many academic departments offer short credit-bearing workshops and institutes for upper-division undergraduates and graduate students during the summer. Special programs include the Archaeology Field program, Infant/ Toddler Caregiving workshop, divorce mediation, and Art and Visual Communication courses in New York City. Institutes are offered on Leadership and Change in an Information Society and Creative Conflict Management.
Residential components of the year-round Syracuse Success Initiative (SSUI) and short-residency degree programs meet during the summer.
Residence hall housing is available to students registered for summer classes.
Facilities
Administrative and student services offices for University College are located at 700 University Avenue. Classes meet on campus at 700 University Avenue or in other on-campus academic buildings.
Other facilities include classrooms and offices in Marshall Square Mall, computer clusters, student lounges, and the Minnowbrook Conference Center in the Adirondack Mountains.
